What are Decimal Fractions?

Decimal fractions sometimes called as decimal numbers contains Integer part and the fractional part.

The decimal placed to the left of the dot is called as the Integer part and the number placed to the right of the dot is called as the fractional part.

For example; the decimal fractions 0.5, 14.1 are representing the fractions 510, 14110.

What is a Fraction Number?

Fraction number represents equal parts of a whole number. For example, if we divide a whole number into equal parts, then each part is a fraction number.

Divide number 4 into two equal parts; 2 out of 4 and 2 out of 4, which is represented as; 24 and 24

Divide number 5 into two unequal parts; 2 out of 3 and 3 out of 5, which is represented as; 25 and 35

Fraction Notation

A fraction has two parts. The number on the top of the line is called the numerator. The number below the line is called the denominator.

The Numerator means how many equal parts of the whole number it is.

The Denomiator means total number of the equal parts in the whole number.

For example;

In this fraction number 24, Numerator is "2" and Denomiator is "4".

Types of Fraction Numbers

  • Unit Fraction - Fraction number with numerator 1 is called as unit fraction number. Ex; 12, 13, 14
  • Proper Fraction - Fraction number in which the numerator is less than the denominator. Ex; 24, 34
  • Improper Fraction - Fraction number in which the numerator is more than or equal to denominator. Ex; 44, 64
  • Mixed Fraction - consists of a whole number along with proper fraction. Ex; 2 24, 3 14
